I disagree with the opinion that compulsory education is not necessary. I think that compulsory education is necessary for learning basic knowledge. In recent years Japanese education has attracted overseas people.
Compulsory education is a necessary school to acquire basic academic ability, not only for individual students, but also for the purpose of "raising all students ". Japanese teachers say "class grows", but this is not heard in other countries. Teaching not only subject study but also teaching to raise classes as a group through home rooms and school events can be said to be a unique point of view in Japan.
That effort has also played a role in preventing students' dropouts. In Japan, we did not compete students not only with academic ability, but also improved special activities such as school events and departmental activities, giving a place for students who are not good at studying to be active. Furthermore, despite the fact that high school is not compulsory education, we have carried out supplements to the lower classes of academic ability, followed up with follow-up examinations and special tasks, and followed it carefully.
Also, at Japanese schools, the proportion of students dropping out is extremely low. Japan's high school admission rate exceeds 97%, but only 2.1% of students drop out in high school. In America, the number of students who graduate from high school is less than 80%, and it is similar in Europe. In France, the number of acquirers of "Baccalaureate" which is the qualification for secondary education completion is only about 83%. The fact that it is substantially difficult for non-acquirers to take full-time jobs is a social problem, and measures to improve the qualification acquisition rate have been taken.
Also, most European countries have failing systems in elementary and junior high schools. It is unthinkable in Japan, but elementary school students fail if they do not reach the reference point. However, it is difficult to inspire children who failed, but rather they have found that there are a lot of cases in which they continue to walk on the bottom as they are, increasing their inferiority complex. For that reason, in European countries, we are switching the institution and guidance policy toward prioritizing promotion rather than failing. And I agree with the opinion that Japanese English education is a problem. I think that it is better for English education to focus on conversation, but I think that it will not lead to the opinion that compulsory education is not necessary.
